Sustainability

Sustainability matters

Sustainability runs through all products and business activities.

Sustainability is one of the biggest considerations in our business – it’s what our entire business is founded on, and what we are motivated by. We pride ourselves on offering a world-class service and operating with the utmost integrity. Our aim has always been to leave the planet in a better way than we found it.

One of the values of Michael Hird, our founder, is to give back to the local community. Ever since Michael has been at the helm of The HIRD Group, he has instilled the importance of sustainability. This is achieved through externally advocating for environmental and social responsibility by recruiting and investing locally, supporting local charities, being a spokesperson for the rail sector in the Doncaster city area, and sponsoring local events such as the St. Leger races.

Environmental credentials

Greener initiatives

  •       100% of waste from our factory is used for energy generation.        Nothing goes to landfill.
  •       On site electricity generation is used to power our Office,                Saw, Twisting & Curving machinery.
  •       Strategic use of materials to reduce wastage.
  •       Promote the re-use of serviceable track components.

Every aspect of our business is considered in a way that helps the wider industry towards the goal of Net Zero. In addition to the green work practices we employ, our products are highly sustainable. All of the fishplates in our IBJs are made from carbon neutral steel, supplied by sustainable steel provider Ovako. Every joint assembled at HRS also has the CBX treatment; to ensure it is as long-life as possible.

Green sentiments

The HIRD Group sponsored the “We are watching” event, which was held alongside COP26 in Glasgow, to send a message to the world leaders that the eyes of the world are on them.

Speaking at the event, Michael HIRD said, “Sustainability is at the heart of all we do, and as the rail industry is becoming more and more pivotal in the country’s decarbonisation strategy, and in attaining Net Zero, it seemed only natural for us to support such an important event, and the message it conveys. We firmly believe that as custodians of the planet, and thus the future of generations to come, we couldn’t not be involved.”
